Fragrant and gooey zaatar pull apart cheesy bread that’s perfect for sharing at any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 3 tbsp zaatar spice blend

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Gradually add the warm water and olive oil while mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Roll out the dough into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and zaatar spice blend over the surface.
  • Cut the dough into even strips, stack the strips on top of each other, and cut the stack into squares. Arrange the squares vertically in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm and pull apart pieces to serve.

Notes

You can swap part of the mozzarella with provolone or add a few crumbles of feta for extra flavor. This bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated gently in the oven.
