A simple and rich dessert with a warm, gooey chocolate center and a light cake top, perfect for family gatherings and quick treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or devil’s food)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 can (about 14 oz) chocolate fudge topping or warm chocolate sauce
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup hot water (if using pudding mix to add lava)
  • Optional: 1 box instant chocolate pudding (mix with hot water for extra lava)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Pour the dry chocolate cake mix evenly into the pan. Do not mix with eggs or oil.
  3. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the cake mix.
  4. Pour the melted butter slowly over the dry mix.
  5. Spoon chocolate fudge topping or warm chocolate sauce over the top.
  6. If using pudding mix, prepare it with hot water and drizzle in key spots.
  7. Bake for 30–40 minutes until the top sets and edges look cooked; the center should remain soft and gooey.
  8. Let cool a few minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For a richer lava, consider adding hot fudge or sweetened condensed milk before baking. Use a 9×13 pan for even cooking and check the cake at 30 minutes.
