A delightful dessert celebrating the flavors of the season with a sweet and tangy apple and cranberry mix, topped with a crunchy oat layer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, cranberries, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, mixing well to coat the fruit.
  3. Transfer the fruit mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In another bowl, prepare the topping by mixing oats, 3/4 cup flour, brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add the cold butter pieces and work them into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts if using.
  6. Spread the topping evenly over the fruit mixture.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the fruit mixture is bubbling.
  8. Let cool slightly and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Use a mix of apples for more flavor and texture. Don’t skip the lemon juice; it balances the sweetness. Let the crisp cool for better texture.
